How to remodel a bedroom in 8 steps

attic bedroom
You spend almost a third of your life sleeping. This makes your bedroom one of the most used rooms in your home. Remodeling doesn’t always have to be a full renovation to get what you want. Sometimes a bit of paint and some new carpet is enough. When you are looking into how to remodel, be sure to ask yourself a few questions.

Before you plunge into a remodel make sure you actually need a full remodel. If you are just tired of the look, this can be fixed without a remodel. Rearrange your furniture, or buy new furniture, replace window hangings, bedspreads, and wall art. All of these can give you a different look for hundreds, instead of thousands of dollars.

If you decide that small changes are not enough, or that you want a structural change then pursue a remodel. A remodel is one of the least labor intensive options that you can pursue. This is especially true if you are not making structural changes.

The best approach to home remodeling is to be organized. Our step by step outline is going to help you keep organized. Just like any plan, don’t try to follow this step by step to the letter. Each remodel is different. Our step by step guide is a good place to start from. Adapt it to your specific remodel

Step 0- Plan

Planning is always the most important step for any remodel. This doesn’t change for your bedroom remodel. When you make a good solid plan you save yourself time, money, and stress. A good plan can take months to get right. The things to think about as you make your plan are;

Why are you remodeling? What about your current bedroom doesn’t work as is? The answer to this question that will drive much of your remodeling plan. Ask yourself if you are remodeling for function, or for looks.

Determine what your style is. This will decide some of your design choices as you go forward. While there are not a lot of areas to show style in a bedroom’s structure, there are places you can make a statement.

Think of what you will use the space for. While this might seem a silly question at first, it is one that needs to be thought of. Some people do nothing but sleep there. Other people use it as an office, or spend most of their time there watching TV. How you will use your bedroom will determine the way you set it up.

The final question is how much you will spend. The cost can be anywhere between $5,000 and 10,000. The higher number is most often found if you make structural changes. If you plan on constructing an en suite bathroom, then you need to factor in the cost of how much it costs to remodel a bathroom.

Step 1- Preparation

Before you begin your remodel you must prepare. This means once you have a plan, determine what you need to make your remodel happen. The best practice is to purchase all of the materials for your remodel before you do anything. This keeps your remodel delayed by waiting on flooring that they had promised in a week, and takes a month to arrive.

This step is also where you check to see if you need to apply for any building permits. Your local building/zoning department will tell you what permits may be needed. Do not simply skip this step and do the work. Unpermitted work can hurt the resale value of your home. File for, and get approval of, any permits that are necessary for your remodel.

Another part of preparation is making sure the rest of your home is ready for your remodel. Put together an alternative sleeping arrangement. Clear and prepare an access lane from the outside. Put floor and wall protection down to make sure your remodel doesn’t cause damage.

Step 2- Demolition

Demolition day is where you take your bedroom down to the bare studs and flooring. Simply put, everything must go. Taking your bedroom down to the bare bones exposes any problems that may be hiding under flooring or behind drywall.

Take care to examine the wiring and structural elements of your bedroom. If you have an older home it is often necessary to fix the wiring. An experienced, licensed, electrician should be brought in to look the wiring over and plan for any changes that must be made.

It’s usually necessary for you to bring in a dumpster of some sort for your demolition. Depending on the amount of material that you are taking out it can also be hauled off by truckload, if you have access to one. This is a more time consuming option though and should be balanced against the cost of the dumpster.

Step 3- Structural Work

When you have the room down to studs and subfloor is the time to make any changes to the floorplan. Evaluate the space from a functional standpoint and fix any of the things that don’t work. The square footage of your home is a fixed number. Any room you add is sacrificed from an adjacent room unless you turn your remodel into building an addition.

Keep in mind that in most cities a bedroom must have a closet, and often an exterior window. Check the building codes to make sure that any planned changes don’t put the classification of your new bedroom at risk.

Step 4- Wiring/fixtures

Once you have made any structural changes the wiring can be put into place. If you have decided to add any new fixtures the wiring needs to be changed to support them. This is something that is best handled by an electrician. Unless you know how to wire something up to code, you shouldn’t even try. It can cost more to fix your mistakes, than it costs to hire the right person for the right job.

Step 5- Drywalling

With your walls rebuilt, and the wiring in place it is time to rebuild the walls. This includes the ceiling as well. Before you put drywall up tape out your furniture, or put it into place to make sure your vision matches reality. Once you put drywall up, any changes become much more expensive.
If everything looks right, then put your drywall into place. For an average size bedroom this is a great project you can do yourself. Begin at the top with the ceiling, and work your way down. Remember that your drywall has to have some sort of support within 4” of an end to be secure. This may require you to put backers in before you hang your drywall. If you have never hung drywall before there are a lot of great guides out there that can walk you through the process.

Step 6- Paint/wallpaper

Whether you paint or use wallpaper is a decision based on your style. There are no real issues in a bedroom with either choice. It doesn’t have any special considerations in this area. So pick whichever you feel more comfortable with.

Painting and wallpapering is another project that you can do yourself if you have time. Wallpapering is a bit trickier than painting, and you should be prepared with some extra wallpaper for initial mistakes. Once you have the process down you will be fine, just don’t get frustrated at the inevitable initial problems you will have.

Keep in mind that you don’t put the baseboards on yet. This happens at the end of your flooring installation.

Step 7- Flooring

Flooring is a place where you are often better off getting professional installers. Regardless of if it is carpet, hardwood, or tile there are special tools necessary to do it right. The good news is that most places offer installation services. Your best choice is to take advantage of any installation offered by the company you purchase flooring from. The next best choice is to hire your own subcontractor to do this part of your remodel.

Step 8- Finishing touches

With all of the big tasks done all that is left are the finishing touches.

  • Hang your doors
  • Replace furniture
  • Buy new window treatments
  • Buy a new bedspread

19 Small bedroom remodeling tips

small bedroom illustration
When you are looking into how to remodel a small bedroom the process itself is not much different than the process mentioned above. The main thing you need to keep in mind is how to best use the size you have. To make your life easier we have pulled together some of the best ideas out there to help you make the most of your space.

As you begin thinking about how to remodel a small bathroom don’t be afraid to make bold choices. A small bedroom doesn’t always have to be a whitewashed room with no personalization. The smaller space can mean you get to imaginative and creative instead of careful. Where a large bedroom can give a sense of luxury, a small one can be a cozy hideaway. Don’t let the lack of space make you give up your sense of style. Use the space that you have to create your own unique personal space.

Tips

Colors Matter: When dealing with small spaces keep your colors bright. Light colors make a small space look bigger, and darker colors make a space seem more closed in. So if you want to make your space seem a bit more spacious keep your colors bright.

Be smart about furniture: A small bedroom means you have to make good choices on your furniture. Putting your king sized bed into a small bedroom isn’t a good choice. Every bit of space you clear up is a more living space. This means you should choose small bedside tables and drawers to save more room.

Frame your bed with custom storage: Make some custom storage cabinetry around the head of the bed. This innovative form of storage takes advantage of some of the more unused space at the head of your bed. Storage cabinets can be a sort of reverse headboard, a stylish and interesting form of storage.

Use recessed storage options: Another storage option is to utilize the space between your wall studs. These areas can be made into attractive storage options with a minimum amount of effort. When constructing some built in storage options be careful not to disturb any wiring.

Install a floating shelf: A floating shelf is a great option. By clearing up the floor space it makes the room feel a bit larger.

Use wall mounted lamps: By lifting your lighting off of the bedside tables it allows you to select smaller bedside tables. This keeps just a tiny bit more space.

Get creative with storage: When you are working with a small area storage space comes at a premium. To maximize your storage you have to be creative and use those areas that normally are just vacant spaces. So use storage spaces that are under other pieces of furniture, or build it into your headboard or other areas you might not normally use.

Declutter: One of the simplest things you can do to make sure you don’t make your small bedroom look even smaller is to get rid of clutter. Before you remodel, go through and get rid of anything that has no purpose. All of us collect things in our rooms over the years that are there just because they haven’t been removed. So clean the house and store or sell the things that are just taking up space. When you are done with your remodel this will help you not instantly clutter up the space.

Kids rooms use bunk beds or trundle beds: If you are remodeling a kids room you can maximize space with a set of bunk beds for multiple children. If you are remodeling a room and it is for only one child a loft bed is a great option to gain space.

Use mirrors to make more room: One of the best ways to gain a bit of visual room is to use mirrors. A few tastefully placed mirrors can make the room seem more open. Remember that this is not the mid 70’s and an entire wall of mirrors only comes out as strange.

Build in your dresser: A carpenter can take your bedroom up a notch by building a set of dresser drawers into $25-$35 an hour. By building a dresser into the wall you free up some much needed spaces.

Lift the bed about 7” for storage: Use a set of bed lifts to gain some storage space that normally goes unused. A clearance of about 7 inches is enough to make a usable space under your bed.

Use a focal point to draw the eye: Give your space a focal point to draw the eye. This can be a work of art, or a feature wall, even a contrasting colored piece of furniture. Use this focal point to make your small bedroom seem just a little bit larger.

Get as much natural light as possible: Natural light is the cure to the look of your small bedroom. The more natural light that you can get, the bigger it will seem. Windows also clear sight lines and makes it feel more open. If you can’t afford a window or skylight, go for light tubes.

Hang window treatments near the ceiling: To make the room seem taller hang the window treatments at the top of the wall above the window. By moving the curtain to the top you create a feeling of vertical space in your bedroom.

Embrace the size and shoot for style: Sometimes trying to fight the size of your bedroom is a battle that you just don’t feel like fighting. Occasionally it works to just go for your style and not try to get any extra space by moving things around.

Use simple color schemes: Avoid visual distraction by keeping your color scheme simple. Avoid a busier color scheme, and stick to a simple and consistent pallet. This choice will keep your bedroom from seeming smaller than it is.

Keep scale in mind: When selecting furniture try to not put overly large furniture with small furniture. Avoid large items with small items that throw off visual balance. Try to keep furniture of the same scale in the bedroom.

Use the vertical: An often forgotten way to make your room work is to use the vertical space. Instead of selecting furniture for width or depth, go for taller furniture if possible. By using the vertical space you get a double benefit.

33 Bedroom Remodeling Ideas Every Homeowner Should Know

wooden bedroom
Embarking on a bedroom remodel is not something that should be done without research and patience. It is one of the most important rooms in your home and you may spend up to a third of your life in this room. It deserves the time and effort to gather the best ideas and put them into place. We have explored the internet to compile these 33 tips and ideas to make your bedroom remodel a success.

It should reflect your personality more than any other room in your house. Personal style can be reflected in your choice of color and design as well as in the furniture and bedding you select. Since your bedroom isn’t a high traffic area you can safely give it a bit more personality than your living room. So be a bit creative and explore some of your own design ideas, even if they are not reflected in the rest of your home, and it may even increase the value of your home.

Look these ideas over

  1. Know why you are remodeling: There are a lot of different reasons why you could remodel your bedroom. This will be the thought that determines a lot of your choices. Remodeling , is a lot different than remodeling for your parents, or your children returning to the nest.
  2. List your wants: Begin with an honest list of what you want. Is it more closet space? Or enough room for a king size bed? Or is it merely that the carpet is old and you want hardwood. You, and your partner if you have one, should list each thing that you’d like to have. Use this as a starting point for your thoughts and negotiations.
  3. Abandon the tub: Ask yourself the following question, “when was the last time I took a bath?”. If the answer is more than 3 months ago, get rid of the tub in your master bathroom. Most new homes have a separate bath and shower. If you don’t have room for both, and you never use the tub, opt for a walk in shower with some luxury elements. Add dual shower heads, or expensive tile.
  4. Go luxury tub: The opposite end of the spectrum is if you do bathe often. If a bath is something that makes the stresses of the day disappear then go all out. Take the opportunity to splurge and get a soaker tub or a whirlpool bath. Keep in mind that these options often take a lot more hot water than a standard tub. You may need to upgrade your water heater to handle the new demands.
  5. Take out the office: If you currently are splitting your master bedroom’s square footage with a home office consider taking it out. Use this area for a reading space, or make it a place to put makeup on outside the bathroom. Having your office in direct sight from your most relaxing area tends to remind you of all the stress, not make a cozy get away from it.
  6. Let in the light: Making your windows larger lets in more light. Natural light has a way of making any room seem a bit larger and more inviting. If you are doing a down to the studs remodel it is the right time to consider expanding your current window, or adding another. If you aren’t doing that extensive of a remodel consider a light tube, this option brings in light but doesn’t require cutting out a wall.
  7. Look at the long term: Consider making your bedrooms, closets, and master bathroom compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Widening the doorways, having a barrier free shower, and installing rails are ways to make your home more accessible. This accessibility can be a selling point, or help you out as you grow older. Both reasons are enough to spend the extra to accomplish this goal.
  8. Make it large enough: If you have an older home, your bedrooms may be smaller than the ones in more modern construction. This is especially true for the master bedroom. If this is the case in your home, consider ways of making the room more in line with modern rooms. If you have the funds, and building codes allow it, expand your house by pushing out a wall or adding a second story. If you don’t have the funds, or codes prohibit it, look at places you can add more square footage.
  9. Hire professionals: Even if you have watched hundreds of hours of home improvement shows, tackling a remodeling project isn’t something to be done lightly. Unless you have the time or experience to do the job right hiring contractors is a much better bet. Doing it yourself can take twice as long, and if mistakes are made be twice as expensive.
  10. Keep it neutral: Keeping the paint colors on your walls more neutral allows you greater flexibility in your decorating. When you select a bold color, or a feature wall of some sort, it dictates the colors that you can use for your décor. So stick to a neutral color and give yourself the ability to change your designs.
  11. Avoid empty space: Large empty areas can make a room feel more like a warehouse than a cozy getaway. Avoid the opposite end of the spectrum of course, don’t make the room cluttered. There is a happy medium though where you fill the space invitingly.
  12. Compromise: If you have a partner your bedroom should reflect both of you. This means it should neither be a floral paradise, nor a leather study. Find a style that appeals to both partners and pursue that in your remodel.
  13. Decals are a good deal: There are a lot of amazing wall decals that can take your neutral colored wall and turn them into a stylish feature. A wall decal is great because they are not a permanent feature. Changing the decals on the walls later on is a simple fix that can change the look of the room without having to repaint.
  14. Indulge the eyes: If possible orient your bedroom towards the best view. This may be a large window overlooking a natural feature, or it may be a fireplace. Whatever the best view is from the bed should be where you orient the design of the room.
  15. Remember the time: You spend about 8 hours a day in your bedroom, more if you have a TV in it. This means you should make it comfortable enough that you enjoy the time you spend there. Make a realistic observation about where you spend your time in your home, and devote an appropriate amount of your budget to it.
  16. Address the lighting: The lighting in your bedroom should be designed to accomplish both bright lighting to help you dress, and dim lighting to help you relax. This means you should install an overhead light that has a dimmer switch, and some bedside table lamps with dimmers also.
  17. Embrace artsy: Keep your bedroom visually interesting. Find some art that’s in the style that will complement the space. Well placed art can take a blank wall and make it into a feature that makes your bedroom stand out.
  18. Furniture makes the difference: In your remodel it is not all about architecture and remodeling the structure. When you remodel the bedroom is also the time to consider furniture choices. Replacing your furniture when you remodel gives you a completely new look. If you keep old furniture often you get a room that looks the same as before you began.
  19. Be consistent: If you pick a style try to stay with it throughout the design of your room. Keeping a consistent style can make your bedroom look luxurious and give you a look that others will envy.
  20. Headboards are focal points: Your headboard can be the focal point for your room. With so many options out there take the time to select one that compliments your décor and provides a great central focus for your remodel.
  21. Don’t Forget the Ceiling: In a bedroom it can be hard to find places to add an accent. Your ceiling can be a great area to add some architectural elements by putting in a tray or vaulted ceiling.
  22. Soften your hardwood: Remember one of the best bedroom remodeling ideas is to soften your hardwood floors with an area rug that the rug should extend out a foot and a half to two feet beyond the edges of your bed.
  23. Storage is important: As you plan the new layout of your room don’t forget to have enough storage. While open space is great and wonderful, if you sacrifice storage area for it you may just end up with piles of clutter instead. Include enough closet space, or shelving areas to address this issue.
  24. Upholstered Walls: An interesting idea is to upholster an entire wall. This is an option that not only softens the look of the room, but can provide a sound barrier to help keep the room quieter if there is a noisy room on the opposite side of the wall.
  25. Separate seating area: If you have a large enough bedroom and plan on having space to relax and spend time in it beyond sleeping try to have a separate seating area. This will keep your bed for sleeping, which often results in a better night’s sleep.
  26. Is your furniture okay: Will your furniture look out of place? If your furniture is worn and out dated put money in your budget to buy new furniture.
  27. Install a built in: Maximize the use of your closet by installing a professional built in closet system. Even if it is not a walk in closet a built in system can make your closet into a better storage option.
  28. Blackout: Your room should be as dark as possible at night, or whenever you are sleeping. This means plan for blinds, blackout drapes, and other means of keeping light out. Don’t forget electronics that have lights, including TV’s and charges. Keeping the bedroom dark will help you sleep soundly.
  29. Hide cords: Nothing can spoil the luxury look of a bedroom like exposed electrical cords. Cord covers are an inexpensive way to keep the upscale look of your room. If your budget stretches further hire an electrician to put the electrical cords in the walls themselves.
  30. Neutral doesn’t mean one color: Just because you select a neutral color doesn’t mean it has to be a monochrome bedroom. Vary your neutral colors from white, to tan and other soft colors within a neutral palette to give your room some needed texture.
  31. Use contrast: Another great idea when you stick to a neutral color for your walls is to contrast this with darker furniture and bedding. This works especially well for larger rooms with ample natural light. These types of rooms allow you to use dark tones without making the room seem small and cave like.
  32. Layer lights: Make sure to address the three layers of light, ambient, accent and task. Ambient lighting is your soft glow lighting that comfortably lights up the entire room. Accent lighting throws light on specific areas for visual effect, such as a spotlight on art, or a piece of furniture. Task lighting gives you light to put makeup on, or read, or work.
  33. Get ideas: Look through places like pinterest and design websites before you design. This will let you find ideas that you can use in your own bedroom remodel. Print out the ideas that catch your eye and make a scrap book to show contractors, designers, or sales people.

How much does it really cost to remodel a small bedroom?

white bedroom
Not every bedroom is a palatial master suite. Sometimes you need to update a small bedroom, one meant for a guest or a child. This may be because your smaller bedroom hasn’t been touched in decades, or you finally want to upgrade your guest or child’s bedroom. No matter the reason, it’s important to get the facts before you begin.

The real cost is not a one price fits all answer. Before you can determine the cost, you have to make some decisions. These decisions will drive your purchases and remodeling plan as you go forward. The basic choice you must make is if your remodel is for longevity or resale. If you are planning on selling your home within five years your remodel should focus on what the market wants more than what you would like.

The costs will depend largely on the materials that you decide to use in your home. Most of the estimates you can find online, including the estimates below, are normally determined using basic materials. If your remodel will be completed with upscale materials you will need to increase your estimates.

Estimating the total costs

Before you begin it is a good idea to consult a professional to get the most accurate estimate. This isn’t free though, getting a professional estimate can cost between $215 and $280. This price is assumed to be for three hours of work by a trained consultant. However, by spending this money up front, you can get a look at the real cost from someone who knows how it works.

By most measures, the cost to remodel a small bedroom measuring about 10’x12′ is approximately $7,880. For this price you can expect new flooring, windows, new drywall with fresh paint, along with new trim and molding to finish off the space.

General Costs

Breaking this cost down, the average price per square foot is $66. This value can be used to calculate an estimate based on the size of your small bedroom. Simply measure both walls and multiply them together to get your total square feet. Multiply the total square feet by 66 and the result is an approximate cost.

When considering labor costs you should remember that carpenters average $70 and hour, Electricians $75 an hour, and painters $30 an hour. These prices vary based on your location, and the time of the year that you do your remodel.

Hiring a general contractor can often ensure that your remodel goes without a hitch. The cost hiring a general contractor can be 10 to 30 percent of the total estimated remodeling budget.

Permitting your work can cost on average $908. Most homeowners spend between $370 and $1440 on a building permit. A building permit is what allows you to legally do construction in your home. Permits are required in almost all municipalities.

Eco-Friendly Options

As you go ahead on your remodel take the opportunity to make your small bedroom remodel eco-friendly. Upgrading your windows and insulation can save you between $126 and $465 a year. The cost to update your insulation is broken down with…

  • Insulated windows can run you between $300 and $700
  • Wall insulation will cost around $1.80 per square foot
  • Attic insulation will cost around $2.25

Flooring Options

Another decision that can affect the cost of your small bedroom remodel is flooring. Most buyers look for hardwood floors throughout a home. This means if you are within five years of selling your home hardwood is the best choice. If you plan on keeping your home for a longer period consider a good soft carpet to keep your bedroom cozy and inviting.

  • New carpeting with padding and insulation is around $20 per square yard for regular non-stain resistant carpet.
  • Hardwood flooring will run around $10 per square foot installed for engineered hardwood, and between $9 and $14 dollars for standard, non-exotic, hardwood.

Walls and Ceiling

Depending on the level of your remodeling plan you may or may not need to replace all of your drywall. If you are able to prep the drywall you can often keep the existing walls and simply repaint them. If the drywall is too extensively damaged then you will need to replace the drywall.

  • Drywall goes for $10/panel and a small bedroom can probably need 13 of these panels
  • Molding is sold by linear foot and averages around $3.00/linear foot
Replacing your door will cost you about $200
  • Painting the room can take up to 32 hours with a professional painter charging around $30 an hour

Structural and Wiring

A major cost in a small bedroom remodel can be the structural and wiring costs of changing things in your bedroom. If you decide to move a wall the costs per wall can be over $1000. Once you begin moving electrical fixtures the wiring must be brought up to code.

If your home is older it is highly likely that your wiring will need to be brought up to code. This can be an expensive proposition at around $70 dollars an hour for the licensed electrician that will be required to accomplish the upgrades.

If you require structural work, a carpenter will cost around $70 an hour. The amount of work you will require a carpenter for will largely depend on if you are moving walls, or if you discover work that wasn’t done properly before. These hidden costs lie behind your current drywall and is something that is difficult to plan for.

As you are planning for lighting keep in mind that canister lights installed in the ceiling can cost an additional $100/lighting fixture over pendant lights.

Closets

To get the most out of a small bedroom you will need to maximize the use of space. This includes making sure the closet does everything it possibly can to provide storage. Installing a closet organizer can often be a life saver even if it costs a bit of money from the budget.

  • Wire rack systems start at around $75 and can cost as much as $200
  • Wooden systems run between $200 and $400
  • To have a custom built wooden system professionally installed can run between $1000 and $2000.

Final Thoughts

Your small bedroom deserves the best remodel that you can put together. Just because it may be smaller, it can have a lot of impact if you plan it out correctly. Put the time and effort into it and you can expect a big return. How much does it really cost to remodel a small bedroom? Now you have the answer.

23 Ways To Save On Your Bedroom Remodel

bedroom
Remodeling your bedroom is one of the first things a lot of homeowners think of when they decide to redo their home. Since we spend about 1/3 or more of our lives in this room, it’s a room that you want to get right. It doesn’t have to cost a king’s ransom though. With some thought, some effort, and some knowledge, you can save money and still have a plush hideaway. By taking advantage of these tips and tricks you can turn your bedroom into a comfortable haven without costing an arm and a leg.

1) Spruce it up: Sometimes all that you need is an in-depth cleaning and some additional surface work. Instead of tearing the bedroom down to the studs, consider if you just need to refresh the paint. Often a professional carpet cleaning and a new paint job will spruce up a bedroom for much less than replacing the carpet and drywall would cost.
2) Address what you dislike: The best way to keep your costs down is to make sure that your remodel addresses the current issues that your room has. Ask yourself what it is about your current bedroom that needs to be fixed the most. Direct your remodeling efforts at these elements first and this can save you some money in the long run.
3) Organize It: Save a little money by getting your room organized. Living in any room for years means that you have probably collected a lot of things that are not needed. Reorganize and get rid of a lot of this extra material and you can save yourself from needing to buy storage options for it.
4) Distract them: Distract the eye with some great looking window coverings. Going with an eye catching window covering can save you some money on molding or a new window casing. The added benefit to this choice is that you can change the look of the room when you buy a new window covering.
5) Recycle: Get recycled materials if possible. Habitat for humanity has a chain of outlets called “ReStore’s”, they can often sell you the materials that you need for a fraction of the cost. Even these slightly used materials can usually be repainted and be indistinguishable from newer materials.
6) Labor can be one of the larger expenses in a remodel: Save room in your budget by doing some of the work yourself. This is especially true when doing the demolition and cleanup yourself. Another area where you can save on labor costs is when you do the transportation yourself.
7) Wholesale savings: Take the time to find wholesale choices. Look around the local stores, try some online research, you can often find wholesale prices. Wholesale prices can be as much as 50% lower than the retail prices.
8) Skip the canisters: Use regular lighting options instead of specialty lighting. There is about a hundred-dollar difference between a lamp and a recessed light.
9) Go for the look without the price: Select materials that mimic more expensive options. Choosing a laminate version of a material can give you the look of more exotic wood or stone, with a much lower price point.
10) Plan in multiples of stock materials: There is a bit of money that can be saved if you plan your dimensions in even multiples of the material you are using. This saves you from buying material that you won’t use in your remodel.
11) Don’t waste time: Ensure everything is on hand before you begin the remodel. If you are using contractors, ensure that you purchase all the materials before you even begin. Every day that you are waiting for some material or permit costs money in many different ways.
12) Keep changes to a minimum: Once you have a plan try to keep to it. Changing a plan mid renovation creates additional expenses as additional materials will be needed. Also, as you change plans there is the consideration that you may need to make new architectural plans, and also get new permits.
13) Embrace the odd: Use mistinted paints to save some money. Often stores will keep paint that is just slightly off what a customer ordered. Buying these mistinted paints can save you some money as they can be found for $1-$5 a gallon.
14) Shop classifieds: When searching for supplies for your remodel don’t forget to look in your local classified sections. These can often yield surprising finds as home owners sell of surplus supplies from their own remodeling efforts.
15) Use engineered flooring: For the look of hardwood at a much lower price point you can use engineered flooring. Engineered flooring is composed of a type of wood base with a veneer of the hardwood for looks.
16) Explore carpet remnants: If you have a bedroom on the smaller side, or you can explore your eclectic side explore carpet remnants. These are the last 20’ or so of larger rolls of carpets. These remnants can often be found at a greatly discounted price.
17) Get multiple quotes: When you are dealing with multiple contractors it is often in your best interest to get multiple quotes. By comparing quotes between contractors and suppliers they will often engage in a bidding war which can lower your overall costs.
18) Use cash to get a discount: Offering to pay contractors or suppliers in cash can sometimes yield a discount over buying on credit. Also, by keeping your remodel off of your credit cards or bank loan you are not paying the interest rate on the money.
19) Paint not wallpaper: One of the simplest ways to save money on your bedroom remodel is to use paint instead of wallpaper. Paint is much cheaper than wallpaper overall. Paint also requires less work hours to accomplish, saving you even more money.
20) Fix the existing wallpaper: If you have wallpaper already on your wall, determine if it is something that is able to be repaired. If there are simple cuts and loose paper but not excessive damage repairing the wallpaper can be your most economical choice.
21) Mini-Blinds: While not considered very stylish mini-blinds can be an inexpensive option for your windows. They may work especially well if you are remodeling a child’s bedroom or a seldom used guest bedroom.
22) Use decals: To give your walls an interesting work without the added hours of detailed painting use decals. Where it may cost you hundreds of dollars to pay a painter for a mural or some specialized painting, a decal can cost maybe 30 dollars.
23) Shop at thrift stores: Looking for lamps, nightstands, and other bedroom furniture? Your local thrift store can have great options at low prices. Some of the furniture won’t be usable of course. But with some elbow grease and a little refinishing other pieces may be just what you are looking for.

20 Budget friendly bedroom remodeling ideas

bedroom in a small apartment
Remodeling your bedroom on a small budget isn’t impossible. It is one of the best rooms to keep costs down in when you are remodeling. There are a lot of budget friendly ideas that can make your remodel not break the bank. We’ve scoured the internet and tried to compile the best list of ideas from what is out there.

Planning makes perfect: As always the best advice is to plan your remodel carefully. Take the time to research and put together a complete plan before you do anything. Find prices, make design choices, select materials, colors, do everything you can before you move towards your remodel.

Keep the structure: The easiest way to save money is to not do any drastic changes. Keep the walls where they are, and don’t attempt to add and en suit bathroom or some other structural change. The major costs in a bedroom remodel end up being structural, avoiding this makes your remodel much more budget friendly.

Do it yourself: Another great way to reduce costs is to do work yourself. If you restrain the urge to rebuild walls and move around structural elements a lot of the work is within the reach of a competent do it yourself’er. If you aren’t up to speed on something, putting in the time to learn can save you thousands of dollars in labor costs.

Help out your contractors: If you are hiring contractors do as much of the work as you can yourself. This includes clean up, preparation, demolition, and transportation. By pitching in and doing these tasks you can save hundreds of dollars in labor costs.

Find furniture and accent pieces second hand: Your bedroom is a great place to use furniture that you source from other places in your home, or from flea markets, yard sales, antique stores. The best décor is a bit eclectic. It should reflect your personal style more than any other room in your house. Capitalize on this by using furniture pieces that aren’t brand new, but that you like.

Repurpose and reuse: Another great way to save some money is to not even buy new furniture pieces. Look around your home and see if you have furniture you could swap to give your bedroom a new look. Bedside tables, chairs, accent pieces, these can all often be found in other parts of your home. If they don’t match, a quick coat of paint will make them match the colors of your bedroom.

Get some accent from painting: Instead of making structural changes try a distinctive paint design to get some style. Pre-made templates make painting accents easier and something most people can do. A distinctive paint design can give it some style that doesn’t cost a fortune.

Save expensive wallpaper for an accent wall: If you want the look of expensive wallpaper, but you don’t have the budget for it, consider an accent wall. Paint the rest of the bedroom walls a complimentary color and keep your expensive wallpaper for one wall. This usually works well for the wall at the head of your bed.

Make your own pieces: If you have the skill, or can learn the skill, make your own pieces. With a little creativity and care a lot of people can make some pieces for their bedroom. Headboards, shelving, accent pieces, these can all be made fairly easily. Sometimes this is as simple as a fresh coat of gloss paint on an older item to make it look fresh and new.

Declutter to make it look newer: A completely free way to make your bedroom look better is to declutter it. Take a look around and often the space has accumulated little knick knacks, and other things, over the years. Take the time to go through your bedroom and remove all the clutter. Buy some storage if you need too, storage bins under your bed take advantage of unused space.

Add molding to make the room look upscale: A great way to give your bedroom a bit of an upscale look without a lot of cost is to use molding. Crown molding is often an inexpensive way to make it look like you spent a fortune on it. This is another simple upgrade that most home owners can accomplish on their own.

Jazz up a dresser with paint or wallpaper: An old dresser can be a new showpiece with a bit of ingenuity. Sanding down an old dresser and bringing it up to date with paint or wallpaper can save a couple of hundred dollars.

Change the handles: A quick way to change the look of your dressers is to replace the handles. This simple fix can give your dresser a different look if you are changing the style of your current bedroom. Combine this with some new paint and you often have dressers that look vastly different than they started. This saves a lot of money that you can put into other elements of your remodel.

Decals are inexpensive accents: If you are no Picasso and dangerous with a stencil, don’t give up hope on wall accents. There are many decals that are available for your walls. These decals are simple to put on, look professional, and have a low cost.

Faux headboard is a cheaper option: If you can’t build a headboard, and can’t afford one, paint one. When you consider it a headboard is just a design element for looks. You can accomplish this with a bit of paint, and maybe some designer elements. You won’t be able to move the bed, but your painted headboard can give your bedroom a unique look.

Chalkboard accent wall: A great way to express your creativity is to paint a wall with chalkboard paint. For young artists and old this is a great bedroom feature. The chalkboard paint gives you the ability to redo the art on that wall whenever you feel like it.

Use small wood strips on the drywall to create texture: A great way to give your walls a more interesting look is to tack on small wood or moulding strips. Once you paint the wall this gives the flat surface some interesting texture. You can accent this by painting the strips a different color to highlight them.

Inexpensive rugs can spruce up a floor: If your hardwood floor is passable but just not very interesting, spruce it up with a few floor rugs. Instead of springing for wall to wall carpeting grab a few luxurious looking floor rugs and place them strategically. This is a lot cheaper, and you have the option to change them when you get tired of your current look.

Use a light tube rather than a window or skylight: A light tube is a much more inexpensive option than either a window or a skylight. Light tubes can be run between ceiling joists and require minimal work on your roof, making them more advantageous than a skylight. Cutting through an exterior wall can require permits and much more money than a skylight. Save yourself a bit of money if you need natural light and go for the light tube instead.

Paint the door black to look expensive: An inexpensive way to get an expensive look is to paint your door black or a dark brown. This gives a sense of richness that a bland white door can’t convey.

20 Secret Bedroom Remodeling Ideas That Increase Home Value

hotel bedroom illustration
Remodeling your bedroom to achieve an increase in your home value is different than remodeling it for your own comfort. To get the most out of your efforts you need to know the best ideas that increase your home value. When you are working towards resale value you have to make choices that appeal to the wider market. So while you may have always longed for a kitchen that looks straight out of Harry Potter, potential buyers probably don’t share this same desire. The resale value for your remodel depends on making it into something someone else wanting to purchase the home will think is amazing, and your choices must reflect it.

Getting the most value may mean adding some additional elements like crown molding. Or you may be able to get the most out of your remodel with just sprucing up the walls and the flooring. This choice will be determined by the other rooms in your home, and the other homes in your neighborhood. Your bedroom should not be radically better (or worse) than the rest of your home. In other words if the rest of your home looks like it was built thirty years ago, and only your bedroom is updated, the impact on home value will be less.

Ideas That Increase Home Value

  1. Plan your entire remodel: Not only will a plan keep you from making bad choices, it will keep you on track, and your entire home in a cohesive look.
  2. Investigate houses: When you remodel, make sure that you are bringing your bedroom up to at least the comparable ones in your area. Ideally you would make it better than these options if possible.
  3. Consult a realtor: When looking to increase your home value,  is your best resource. The internet is never going to give you as specific of advice as a realtor will be able to provide.
  4. Prioritize funds: Find the elements of your bedroom that will give the best return on the money you put into it. This will vary by location and can be anything from crown molding, or a tray ceiling, to hardwood flooring. Find out what buyers in your area ask for most often, and spend money to get the best quality materials to address that desire.
  5. Hire a pro: Another resource to find ways to increase your home value is to hire a professional designer. Often they charge around $100 an hour, but they can give you a professional opinion on what elements of your bedroom need to be changed.
  6. Do the repairs: Have the space inspected and address any damages that are found. This may include repairing old subflooring, addressing wiring issues, and other things that may be found in the inspection. While it may not give a visual upgrade, these repairs will .
  7. Paint: One of the simplest ways to upgrade and increase the value of your bedroom is with a simple paint job. A $25 dollar bucket of paint can make even an older bedroom look new and fresh.
  8. Go green: Change out lighting fixtures, put in better insulation on the exterior walls, replace windows with double paned windows. Every bit of effort put into making it more energy efficient saves you money now, and is a selling point for potential buyers.
  9. Throw away the popcorn: A popcorn ceiling is something that most modern designs say must go. Taking this off your ceiling improves the resale value of your home and helps keep potential buyers interested.
  10. Extra Bedroom=Extra money: In almost all cases, if you are adding a bedroom, you add value to your home. There are cases that this is not true, but generally speaking another bedroom will add to your home’s value. This is especially true if you build it as an addition, and don’t sacrifice any of your current floorplan.
  11. Increase the light: If your window isn’t on a side of the house that gets a lot of light add in a skylight, or a sun tube. These options bring in more natural light and make the space feel more open and welcoming. A sun tube can give you the most value since they are less expensive.
  12. Upgrade a dated floor: While not as common in bedrooms as in other rooms in the home (yes we are talking about you kitchen) you may have a dated flooring option. Upgrade to hardwood, or a good stain resistant carpet. Your upgrade will improve the value. The two main things people see are floors and walls.
  13. Hardwood: While a carpet is the most comfortable option, hardwood is what most buyers want in the current market. So forgo a bit of comfort and put in hardwood. If your budget can’t stretch that far select engineered hardwood. Soften your hardwood up with a thick area rug to get the best of both worlds.
  14. Heat it up: A luxury option is radiant floor heating. Radiant heating can often be installed between the floor joists. If you have already brought your bedroom up to the ones in comparable homes this little extra can put your home just a bit above your neighbors.
  15. Remove questions: As difficult as it may be, ask your friends and relatives what they don’t understand about your bedroom. Maybe it’s a damaged ceiling you never fixed, or why the closet is so small. Ask and find out what they don’t get about your bedroom and then fix it. If your friends and family don’t understand, potential buyers won’t either.
  16. Raise the ceiling: Add in a vaulted or tray ceiling to improve the luxury factor of the bedroom.
  17. Master the Master Bath: Upgrading the master bathroom should be included in any master bedroom remodel. If you make the bedroom up to date, and have a dated bathroom you haven’t increased the value of the room. In a master bedroom, modest updates and a refinished bathroom provide a much higher value to the home.
  18. Tech it up: A judicious application of technology can increase the value. Wiring in speakers is a fairly safe option. Speakers rarely become outdated. Keep the access to the system upgradeable to stand up to changing trends. Add outlets with USB charging ports as a simple but effective upgrade to attract buyers. If you want to go all out there are systems available that will allow someone to control lighting, temperature even the shades.
  19. Address the closet: If you have an older home the closet may be much smaller than those that come with newer homes. If this is the case, consider expanding the closet if possible. If there is no way to expand the closet invest in a custom closet organizer to maximize the use of the space.
  20. Master bedroom first: It’s a truth that people like to envision themselves in a space. With most home owners being adults, it makes sense to put the most money into the master bedroom. This doesn’t mean have a completely stylish master bedroom and a dated worn out second bedroom. But all things being equal, your dollars are better spent on the master than the other ones in the home.
